Charles Hamel founded Climb V.I. to combine his love of sailing, climbing, and guiding explorers through memorable outdoor experiences.
Charles is a licensed captain, credentialed to operate vessels on international voyages. For years he split his time between the Caribbean and Alaska, where he skippered charter yachts and diveboats, guided open-water kayak trips, and ran sled dog tours on a glacier in the Juneau Ice Field. Now he spends his off season as a sailing instructor and captain in San Francisco Bay.
His favorite crags are in Lake Tahoe; the High Sierras; Red River Gorge, KY; Bayamon, P.R.; Railay, Thailand; Potrero Chico, Mexico; and of course, The Baths, Virgin Gorda.
In 2011 Charles and Allen Zeitlin started the charity project www.Climbing4PTSD.org. The two raised funds for PTSD research by climbing Time Wave Zero, the second longest sport route in N. America.
